News and Articles from Paras Hair Transplant

A Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant is a permanent solution to hair loss. But don’t expect an overnight miracle. Healthy hair growth takes time. Regardless of whether you receive FUE for head hair, eyebrow hair or facial hair, the post-transplant timeline of events is similar. Let’s look at that timeline.

Before Hair Transplant

The first step in an FUE hair transplant is a face-to-face consultation with our experienced hair transplant surgeon. He will assess your hair loss situation, answer any questions you may have and listen to your specific hair restoration goals. The doctor will then determine whether you are a suitable candidate for FUE.

Day before FUE Hair Transplant

The patient is asked to come in the day before surgery, the doctor likes to prepare the donor area in advance. Photos will be taken; the scalp will be prepared (shaved); and the density will be measured.

The Big Day!

The doctor will administer a local anaesthetic. The doctor will then begin extracting hair follicles from the back of the scalp, storing them temporarily. This usually takes 2-3 hours and is followed by a rest. The doctor will then make the incisions and implant the follicles into the recipient area, taking another 2-3 hours, depending on the number of follicles involved. Most procedures take between 4 and 8 hours to complete.

In the first week, the recipient area will look like a grazed knee. It will bleed, scabs will form, and these will become itchy, before falling off. Redness will fade and then disappear. The donor area will heal within the first 3 to 4 days. During this period, you must not stand under a shower in such a way that water falls directly on the recipient area.

You will receive detailed instructions on how to keep the recipient area clean and moist. The clinic will contact you by phone to check on your progress and remind you of all post-operative instructions. After 7 days, you can wash the recipient area normally.

+14 Days After FUE Hair Transplant

For the first 14 days, you must not:

  • swim
  • lift heavy weights
  • do strenuous exercise

After 14 days, you can return to your normal routine.

In the 10 days after the procedure, special care must be taken to avoid accidentally dislodging the grafted follicles. Avoid heavy exertion of any kind as well as vigorous combing and direct exposure to sunlight. This will ensure the hair grafts undergo a healthy, seamless transition.

+6 to 9 Weeks After FUE Hair Transplant

This can be a discouraging phase for many patients. The transplanted hair often appears to fall out! Actually, the hair breaks off and the transplanted hair follicles remain intact. This is temporary and necessary. The growth cycle will commence thereafter.

Watch out for ingrown hairs in the recipient area. These may occur as big, red pimply lumps and bumps. In most cases, they will clear up on their own and the hair grafts won’t be affected. If you experience excessive ingrown hairs, contact the clinic immediately.

+3 Months After FUE Hair Transplant

This is the phase you’ve been waiting for. The hair will be at an active phase in the hair growth cycle and new growth of the transplanted hairs should be noticeable. After 8-10 weeks, expect to see excellent growth. At first, the new hairs will be quite thin. With time, they’ll thicken.

By now, the donor and recipient areas will have healed, and all traces of the transplant will have vanished.

+12 to 14 Months After FUE Hair Transplant

At 6, 12, and 18 months, you will be contacted by the Paras Hair Transplant Clinic and invited in for a post-procedure follow-up appointment. The doctor will examine the hair growth and answer any questions you have about the outcome of the transplant.
